Founded in 1873, the Cape Ann Museum is a cultural center that includes galleries (displaying both permanent and temporary exhibitions), an auditorium, library/archives, a children's activity center, two sculpture gardens and two historic homes. The largest collection of works by Fitz Henry Lane, renowned marine artist and native son, may be found there, as well as paintings and sculptures by artists with a connection to Cape Ann. Two historic properties maintained by the museum, The White-Ellery House (1710) and the Captain Elias Davis House (1804) may be visited. The Library & Archives is a major resource for the study of the industrial, social, maritime and art history of Cape Ann. Maritime Gloucester is a multi-building attraction on Gloucester’s working waterfront. Visitors to the museum can explore the Sea Pocket Aquarium; a gallery featuring schooners, fishing, maritime innovation, marine heroes, and boat building exhibits; and an interactive exhibit providing images, video, audio and real-time data access to the marine life and unique features of the 842 square mile marine plateau that sits between Cape Ann and Cape Cod. Maritime Gloucester features the oldest continuously operating marine railway in the country, and schooners provide opportunities to go out on public sails. There is a museum shop on the premises.

The Peabody Essex Museum grew out of the collection of East India Marine Society, an organization of Salem captains whose charter called for acquisition of “natural and artificial curiosities.” Its permanent collection contains art and artifacts of Africa, Asia, India, China (with a Qing Dynasty house brought from the Huizhou region), Japan, Korea, Pacific Islands, and features objects of maritime art and history that include paintings, drawings, ship models, marine decorative arts, tools, weapons, navigational instruments, and ship and yacht plans. It also has a thriving changing exhibition schedule that sometimes includes important traveling shows.

Sargent House Museum

The Sargent House Museum is located in Gloucester in a high Georgian house and garden, built in 1782 for the feminist writer and philosopher Judith Sargent Murray and her first husband. The house is presented as it might have been in 1790, with period decorative furniture and art. In addition to learning about the history of Gloucester, visitors will see published work by Murray from the time, as well as art by her great-great nephew John Singer Sargent. Several guided tours are available, each of which focus on a particular subject. (Check the website for details and special events.)
