Music of the West African Kora Comes to Rockport w/ Sean Gaskell
Wednesday, October 94:00—5:00 PMBrenner RoomRockport Public Library17 School Street, Rockport, MA, 01966
We are delighted to host the talented, Sean Gaskell while he is on his east coast tour presenting his educational performance on the kora, a 21-stringed West African harp. Hailing from Tacoma, Washington, Sean's journey with the kora began in 2006, inspired by Kane Mathis, a man whose performances have earned him recognition by the Gambia West Africa president. This experience led Sean to West Africa, where he studied under Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Brikama, Gambia, and later with both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal.
Listen here to the magical tones of this 800 year old instrument.
The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots. Many songs featured on the kora preserve an 800 year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire. Gaskell has presented adult, youth and family programs at over 400 libraries and a multitude of K-12 schools, colleges, universities and assisted living facilities throughout the United States and Canada.
