Most people are unaware that there was a terrible coin shortage during the Civil War. This presentation will describe the alternatives that the public used while conducting business. Paper scrip, stamps, encased stamps, federally issued fractional currency, and privately issued tokens will be discussed.

Dana Zaiser of Norton, MA, is President of the Olde Colony Civil War Round Table of Dedham, MA and has been published five times on this subject. This educational and entertaining talk is designed for both history students and general audiences.
