"The Man who was Born Posthumously" - The life and works of Edward Gorey

Frequently assumed to be British, and 19th Century, Edward Gorey (1925-2000) is actually an American author, illustrator and book artist. In addition to producing almost a half century of commercial art, set and costume designs, and magazine work, Gorey also created a body of self-authored and illustrated works like The Unstrung Harp, The Doubtful Guest, The Gashlyrumb Tinies and The Curious Sofa (and 113 other titles published in his lifetime) whose influence on children’s literature, film, fashion, and graphic design has carried onward to this day. Maurice Sendak, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Lemony Snicket and sores of other children’s book creators, filmmakers, set designers, and graphic novelists all reflect the absurd and darkly entertaining world that Gorey created with his masterful pen and ink drawings.

Edward’s unusual life and ingenious works, as well as his Yarmouth Port home, now a museum, will be discussed and presented by Gregory Hischak. A playwright, performer, and designer, Hischak is the Director of the Edward Gorey House and has curated/designed exhibits at the Gorey House since 2014.  Also discussed will be the current House exhibit, Exquisite Corpse: Edward Gorey’s Moveable Books (running through December 29th).
