CITY OF THE SUN: CAHOKIA MOUNDS STATE PARK

Join us as Justin Smock, Conservation Education Representative at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, discusses the ancient City of Cahokia, a site located in present-day Illinois which was inhabited by Native Americans from about 700 to 1400. An ancient metropolis, it was an artistic, cultural power center during the Mississippian period, and its inhabitants created the largest earthworks in North America. Who built the mounds? How did Monks Mound get its name? What was found at Mound 72? Learn this and more through a presentation that takes audiences on a journey through time.

Justin Smock is the current Conservation Education Representative at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. He is a graduate from the University of Illinois at Springfield, with a Master of Arts in History. Justin has worked at Cahokia Mounds in various positions from intern to seasonal interpreter, to working for the Museum Society and is proud to be back once again telling the history of this U.S. National Historic Landmark.
